Don’t Ever Put These Things in Your Washing Machine
Things You Should Never Put in a Washing Machine
(Seriously, don’t try it at home or anywhere)
Washing machines are tough- but they’re not invincible. And while they handle a lot of everyday messes just fine, there are certain things they should never be trusted with. Some will ruin your clothes, others will destroy the machine itself, and a few might even start a fire (yes, really).
Here’s a quick list of what not to toss in:
1. Anything Covered in Pet Hair
A fur-covered blanket or bed might seem fine to throw in, but the hair clumps in the drain and creates major buildup. Always shake it out thoroughly or run it through a lint roller first.
2. Memory Foam Anything
Pillows, bath mats, mattress toppers- if it’s made of memory foam, it doesn’t belong in the washer. It soaks up water like a sponge and falls apart. You’ll be left with shredded foam and a crying washing machine.
3. Suits or Blazers
Even if it’s “just one wash,” don’t do it. Structured pieces like blazers lose their shape fast in a washing machine. They’re made for dry cleaning, period. Let our dry-cleaning department save you from that regret.
4. Embellished or Beaded Clothing
Beads, sequins, or anything decorative will either fall off or rip the fabric during a wash cycle. Even delicate cycles aren’t safe. If you love the extra bells and whistles on your outfit, hand wash it- or better yet, bring it to us.
5. Bras (Especially Underwire)
The underwire can poke through the fabric and damage both your bra and your machine’s drum. At the very least, put them in a mesh bag and use a gentle cycle. Or hand wash them to be safe.
6. Cashmere, Silk, or Wool Sweaters
These fabrics are super delicate. Even cold water can cause shrinkage or warping. Most of them are labeled dry clean only for a reason- and we’ve seen too many expensive pieces ruined this way.
7. Heavy Comforters (That Don’t Fit)
Yes, they can be washed- if your machine is large enough. But if it’s crammed in, it won’t clean properly, and it could throw your washer off balance or damage the motor.
(We’ll have a full post about how to wash comforters in this very blog!)
8. Items with Flammable Stains
Clothes with gasoline, cooking oil, or lighter fluid on them should never go straight into a washer or dryer. The heat can cause sparks or fires. Rinse them out by hand thoroughly first- or better, bring them to a professional.
In Short…
Your washer is smart- but not that smart. When in doubt, skip the guesswork and ask us. A lot of the time, fixing damage costs more than just letting the professionals take care of it the right way from the start.
