How to Bring the Warm & Fuzzy Back to Your Tough Towels

How to Fix Hard, Scratchy Towels (And Make Them Soft Again)

(Because no one wants to dry off with sandpaper.)

We’ve all had it happen: your once-soft towels start feeling stiff, scratchy, and weirdly non-absorbent. It’s not that they’re old- it’s usually build-up. Over time, detergent, hard water minerals, and fabric softener (yes, softener! The irony! ) can leave behind residue that ruins your towels’ feel and function.

Good news: you can bring them back to life. Here are some home remedies.

Step 1: Strip the Build-Up

Run the towels through a hot wash cycle with just white vinegar- no detergent.

  • Use one cup of vinegar

  • Skip fabric softener completely
This helps break down leftover detergent, softener, and mineral residue.

Step 2: Wash Again with Baking Soda

Right after the vinegar cycle, wash them again- still hot water, but this time add half a cup of baking soda.

  • Again, no detergent or softener

  • This boosts the breakdown of leftover grime and helps eliminate odors

Step 3: Dry Properly

Shake towels out before tossing them into the dryer to fluff the fibers. Dry on medium heat- high heat can stiffen fibers again.

Bonus tip: skip dryer sheets for towels. They coat the fibers and make them less absorbent.

Optional: Water Quality Check

If your water is hard (lots of minerals), the stiffness will keep coming back. You can install a water softener or use laundry boosters like Borax or Calgon with your regular loads to reduce buildup.

Final Thought

You don’t need new towels- you just need to teach your old ones how to feel new again. Vinegar and baking soda might sound old-school, but they’re a laundry power duo for a reason.
