Tackling the Seemingly Insurmountable Task of Washing Comforters
How to Wash a Heavy Comforter Without Ruining It (or Your Washing Machine)
It may seem like an insurmountable task, yet it’s possible to conquer at home- but there is a right way. Comforters are one of those things we tend to forget need washing… until we remember, panic, and stuff them into a machine that clearly doesn’t want to deal with it. If you’ve ever had your washer go lopsided, stop mid-cycle, or soak your comforter without actually cleaning it, you’re not alone.
Here’s how to wash a comforter at home- without the drama.
Step 1: Check the Label
Always. Look for:
-
Machine washable?
-
Water temperature?
-
Any special instructions (like no tumble dry)?
If it says “dry clean only,” believe that- comforters are expensive, and it’s not worth the risk.
Step 2: Make Sure It Fits
Lay the comforter next to your washer. If it looks like it’s going to take up more than 3/4 of the drum space, don’t force it. It won’t clean properly, and it could throw the machine off balance. Consider using a laundromat with over-sized washers- or save yourself the hassle and bring it to us.
Step 3: Use a Gentle Detergent
Go for something mild and skip the fabric softener. Softener can coat the fill material and reduce the fluffiness.
Pro tip: Use less detergent than usual- comforters are dense, and too much soap doesn’t rinse out easily.
Step 4: Add Dryer Balls or Tennis Balls
When drying, throw in a few clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls. No you’re not Venus or Serena, and no we won’t be attending US Open. But they do help redistribute the filling, reduce clumping, and speed up the drying process.
Dry on low heat, and be patient- comforters take time to fully dry! You might need to pause and fluff it midway.
Final Tip
Still feels damp after drying? Lay it out flat or hang it over a railing to air-dry the rest of the way. Damp spots trapped inside can lead to mildew if ignored- not good!
Washing a comforter at home is doable- but only if your machine can handle it. When in doubt, drop it off with us. We’ve got commercial equipment made for heavy-duty items and know exactly how to get them clean without the damage.
